Sheer Khurma is a traditional muslim festive breakfast, and dessert for celebration. Sheer khurma dates back to the times when Prophet Mohammed used to eat dates soaked in milk, hence the name Sheer Khurma which means "Dates in milk". And then as the dessert travelled across other countries, vermicilli and other nuts were added.
The slight golden hue of sheer khurma and the sweetness is from the dates, although we don't entirely rely on it. Make sure you use dates which are not too squishy nor too dry. I roasted vermicilli in ghee along with almonds and cashews. I Boiled milk with dates, sugar and 2 pods of cardamom. Then added the vermicilli mixture into the boiling milk.
Every eid Ammi prepares Sheer Khurma the previous night of eid. I stand in the kitchen reluctant to leave as the aroma of sheer khurma drives me towards it followed by ammi saying that it shouldn't be eaten until the 'Fateha' next morning of eid. As I said Eid without Sheer Khurma is imprefect.
Relish it with your loved one's✨
Happy cooking❤️
