In kerala, the basic concept of sadhya comes from Onam sadhya. Vamana, the fifth incarnation of Lord vishnu had conflict with Mahabali, the king of Kerala. The belief that the king Mahabali comes back to visit the citizens every year is celebrated.

Traditionally sahdya contains 26 dishes but one element served in every sadhya is pickle. Three kind of pickles are served that is lemon pickle, mango pickle amd injipuli.

The main dish is boiled rice served along with other dishes which include parippu, sambar, rasam, avial, thoran, pachadi, papadam, sharkara upperi and buttermilk. Buttermilk is served at the last. From the left to right there is acidic to alkaline food and it ends up with payasam which is really alkaline.
